The CH-47D Chinook is the second of the two big twin-rotor aircraft, added in v0.4.6. It carries 24 people and lifts the same 10,000 kg as the MH-47G, but it is two tonnes lighter and answers the controls a little quicker for it. Like the MH-47G its hold is one you can stand fully upright in: walk in off the rear ramp, take any free seat, or stay on your feet while it flies. The pilot sits on the left. There are two ways in. The pilot and co-pilot each have their own cockpit door — pilot on the left, co-pilot on the right — and the hold has a forward airstair on the right-hand side in two halves, the upper swinging up and the lower dropping down to make the steps. Both halves work as one door: open either and the pair moves together.

Variants

Two rotors, no tail rotor

Like the MH-47G, the CH-47D has no tail rotor. It lifts on two big rotors, one at the front and one at the back, turning in opposite directions so they cancel each other out. There is no spin to fight with the pedals — turning is done by tilting the two rotors against each other instead. This changes one thing about damage:
On the Chinooks the Rotor 1 damage area is the front lifting rotor and Rotor 2 the rear one, not a main and a tail rotor. Losing either does not send you spinning: it takes away about half your lift, the aircraft sinks, and it pitches toward the rotor that has gone — the tail drops and the nose comes up if the rear one goes, the nose drops if the front one does. Lose both and it falls.
Each rotor kicks up its own dust: the Chinook raises two dust clouds near the ground, one under each rotor, and a rotor that has been shot out stops raising its own.

Forward airstair door

This is the one thing no other helicopter here has. The CH-47D’s way in at the front is a two-piece airstair on the right-hand side, just behind the cockpit:
  • The upper half hinges at the top and folds right up against the fuselage, out of your head’s way
  • The lower half hinges at the bottom and drops down to become the steps into the hold
  • Both halves are separate fitted parts, so either can be removed, damaged or replaced on its own
  • They open and close together — they are one door on the aircraft, in two pieces
  • This is the way into the hold. The pilot and co-pilot have their own cockpit doors and do not need it

Rear Ramp

The CH-47D’s rear ramp folds in two sections, like the MH-47G’s — the lower section swings down to the ground and the upper section draws clear above it. Both run off the same control, so it is one ramp to you.
  • From the pilot or co-pilot seat, scroll the cockpit prompt list to Open/Close Rear Ramp and press F
  • Anyone standing outside at the back of the aircraft can also open and close it
  • While the ramp is still moving the action is unavailable — let it finish, then press again
  • All 22 hold seats are taken from inside — walk in off the ramp and sit anywhere free
  • You do not need the ramp open to get out of the aircraft; it is for driving and walking in and out
  • Ramp opens and closes are written to the activity log when logging.activityLog = 1

Stand-Up Cabin

The two Chinooks and the two Ospreys are the only ones you can stand upright in. In every other helicopter with an interior you stay crouched; in a Chinook you walk the hold at full height, on the ground or in the air. It also has Cabin Mode, the same as the UH-1H, MH-60L Black Hawk and MH-47G:
  1. Sitting as pilot or co-pilot, look back towards the hold to bring up the Move to Cabin action
  2. Use it, and your character gets out of the seat and stands in the hold, travelling with the aircraft as it flies
  3. You can walk about, use weapons and aim down sights as normal
  4. Return to Cockpit puts you back — into your own seat if it is still free, otherwise the other one
Only the two cockpit seats get this action; passengers in the hold already get out onto their feet with the normal “Get Out”.
crew.cabinModeEnabled defaults to 1, so the Move to Cabin action is available out of the box. Server owners can disable it globally by setting crew.cabinModeEnabled = 0 in mod_config.json — when off, the action does not appear at all.
See Cabin Mode for full details.

Sling Loading

The CH-47D lifts the same 10,000 kg as the MH-47G — the joint highest here, and enough for the heaviest vehicles.
  • It carries a load on two hooks, one at the front and one at the back, with chains to the front and rear of the load so a long vehicle hangs level instead of nose-down. The AW101 Merlin and MH-47G are the others with two hooks
  • Unlike the MH-47G, its winch gear is not part of the model — the mod supplies the winch unit when a load is hooked, the same way it does for the aircraft that have no gear modelled
  • The weight limit is sling.maxKg in the helicopter’s config file. A load over the limit gives you no hook-up action at all

Landing gear

The CH-47D sits on four fixed wheels — two at the front, two at the back. They do not fold away, and there is no landing gear action on this aircraft. Only the AW101 Merlin, the Mi-24 Hind and the two Ospreys have retractable gear.

Door and wheel classnames

It also takes two HeadlightH7 bulbs, one for each landing light. The 22 hold seats have no doors of their own and are taken from inside. Door classnames differ per colour variant (for example CZ_CH47DChinook_Pilot_USArmy, CZ_CH47DChinook_Cargo2_RoyalAirForce) — put these in your types.xml if you want helicopters to spawn with doors fitted, and use the variant that matches the helicopter or the door will be the wrong colour. The wheels are the same on every variant.

Cargo

As well as its built-in storage, the CH-47D takes up to 10 extra cargo modules, the same as the rest, with the size of each module set by you in the config.

Default Flight Tuning

These are indicative dev-tuned defaults and can change between builds — the in-game Admin Panel always shows the live per-helicopter values.
