W, A, S and D. It is a per-player preference, not a server setting — turn it on and it follows you.
Turning It On
PressK while seated in the pilot seat. An on-screen confirmation tells you which state you just switched to (new in v0.4.0), and the badge on the HUD updates.
The toggle has a 0.5 second debounce, so a fumbled double-press cannot land you back where you started.
Your choice is saved to your DayZ profile and persists between sessions and between servers — set it once and it stays set.
How It Steers
Mouse aim deltas are mixed additively into cyclic pitch and roll on top of the keyboard input. The keyboard is not replaced or reduced:W/A/S/D keep their full authority, and mouse movement adds to whatever they are already commanding. You can fly on either, or both at once.
The mix is smoothed, so the aircraft follows the mouse rather than snapping to it.
Limits
- 3rd person only. Mouse Flight does not operate from the 1st-person cockpit view
- Only from the seat holding flight control — on DayZ 1.29 that is the pilot seat. Passengers and the co-pilot are unaffected
- Suspended while free look is active. Free look is you moving the camera, not the aircraft, so the mouse stops feeding the cyclic for as long as it is on and resumes when you drop it
The HUD Badge
The dial cluster carries a Mouse / Keyboard badge so you never have to guess which mode you are in:
See HUD & Fuel for the rest of the cluster.
Sensitivity
Sensitivity is read from theCZAutoz_MouseSens key in your DayZ profile.
The key is written with its default the first time you fly, so it will be there to edit. Values outside the range are clamped. An in-game settings page for this is planned — until then, editing the profile key is the way to change it.
Free Look Interaction
On servers runningfeatures.freeLookAlwaysOn = 1, free look is normally pinned on for crew. Mouse Flight needs the mouse for the cyclic, so it suppresses that pin.
Since v0.4.0 that suppression applies only to the crew member holding the controls. Passengers always get the server’s configured free-look behaviour, regardless of what the pilot has Mouse Flight set to.
